Old Wood Barrel End Tables/Plant Holder

Hello Friends! How has everyone been? I have been a busy little bee lately. Now that fall is here I have been in cleaning out the house mode. I am trying to clear out my basement for the upcoming colder months. We like to watch movies and hang out in the basement where it’s nice and cozy on colder days but my basement currently holds a copious amount of overflow of garage sale and estate sale finds. I honestly don’t know how this happens every year but it does.

In my ventures of cleaning and “oh I forgot I bought this and that”, I came across 2 old barrels. I had great intentions for these months ago but am only getting around to it right now. How does this always happen!!!

I had two of these barrels, both different colors but pretty much the same size. So my thought was to paint them exactly the same to like they were meant to be a pair. I painted the body of the barrels a deep grey. (I mixed BB Frosch chalk paint powder in with my paint to create chalk paint. LOVE THIS STUFF!!!) I then used the gold Martha Stewart craft paint on the metal rims to give it a luxurious look. I am diggin’ gold accents right now

After 2 coats of each of those colors, I stained the tops in Walnut by Minwax. After that dried, I coated the whole barrel, including the top and sides with a coat of Varathane to protect my new beauties.

What a transformation!!!

You can so many things with barrels. Here are a few ideas.

1. Take a house plant and shove that puppy right inside the barrel. (I tend to kill real plants like it’s nobody’s business so I like fake ones!) Cute

2. Side Table beside a chair.  Flip that baby upside down and use her as a little table beside a cute chair. Adorbs!

3. Again use them as end tables beside a sofa or chair. (My sofa does not allow for end table because we don’t have the room, so I came up with the idea to use them like this.)  This is where they live for now and I can’t fathom why I didn’t do this sooner!!!!

I love repurposing old items. This was a great way to reuse a small wood barrel to make it work in our house. As always think outside the box every now and then and you might just surprise yourself!!!
