Antique Hutch & Dining Room Table Makeover

HEY HEY friends! This week I did a HUGE project!!! If you remember I bought this piece at an auction about 6 months ago (maybe more, time flies when you’re painting!)

I paid more for it that I would have normally but I just saw the potential in this piece. It was like going to the pet pound. You can’t leave it behind!!! So home it came with me and sat, and sat and waited patiently until I was ready to paint it.

That’s when this table and chairs come in the picture. I got these chairs and table separately in my travels and they were hideous when I first laid my eyes on them. The chairs were solid oak and UGLY!!!! I sanded down the top almost to the bone leaving some of the pre existing finish on. I knew I was going to use Weatherwood Stain on the top which reacts with the woods natural tannins to give it a really rustic natural look. So, if I left some of the pre existing stain on the top, the weatherwood stain would not take in those areas and only in the areas where I sanded down to the bone creating a really weathered look. I then put 4 coats of Varathane triple thick Polyurethane in satin over top. (First time I used this poly and I LOVED it!!) So easy to put on and it didn’t really smell.

So after I started the table I then realized that the hutch would go perfectly with table and chairs.

And so a match was made in furniture heaven.  I painted the hutch white and the chairs and inside of the back of the cabinet a blue/grey. I don’t know the color of the blue/grey, it was a mis-tint in the reject paint section and I got a great deal on it. I used BB Frosch chalk paint powder and mixed that with the white paint for the hutch to create chalk paint.

Waxed the hutch with BB Frosh clear wax and put the existing hardware back on because it’s amazingly gorgeous.
