Hello friends! Today I am going to share with you how to take something that might not fit into your décor and personalize it to fit in with your own taste! So I found this cute wooden arrow in my travels for a great price however I don’t go to the lake, I don’t have a house that is by the lake nor do I have a lake themed room. Unless the lake house has a clean bathroom with running water, a soft bed, fresh coffee and HGTV I am not going!!WHAT! ? ! SO, I thought why not make it into something that works for me.
I love arrows right now so that’s what this cute little sign had going for it. It was an arrow. I just didn’t care for anything else about it. So I lightly sanded the whole arrow to prep it for some paint. I painted the front of the arrow and off white color. Let that dry and then…you guessed it, FROG TAPE. I used this tape to create a fun arrow like pattern over the painted surface.
I then took a grayish flat paint and made my own chalk paint using BB Frosch Chalk Paint Powder. (You can see how to do that here.) I used a really wet brush to create a water color effect on the exposed areas. I did one light coat of the gray and then carefully and slowly took of the tape.
This is what happened.
But I knew this would happen. It happened to me before here and I loved how it turned out. If you don’t prep your surface correctly this is what happens when you pull the tape off. I chose not to use a chalk paint or a primer before I painted the off white color over the arrow. WHY? So that it wouldn’t stick as well as it normally would so that when I ripped the tape off some of the paint would come off too.
It gives it a really rustic and worn look like it’s been sitting out in the elements for a long time.
I had a few spots where the gray paint leaked under the tape. (this sometimes happens when you use a wet brush technique.)
But don’t fret!! It’s an easy fix. All you have to do is lightly sand over the whole surface with a fine sanding block. Sanding will also take some of the paint off too which makes it look even more worn. LOVE!
Now we need to protect what we created. I used BB Frosch clear wax. It cures in 15 minutes!!! what!!!!
You take a popsicle stick and dunk it into the wax jar. Load it up and “butter” your wax brush. A little goes a long way folks.
Then brush the wax onto the arrow all over.
Rub in the wax with a lint free cloth and in 15 minutes you can buff it to a nice sheen with another clean lint free cloth.
WOWZA!! I love how this turned out. Now it fits in with my décor perfectly.
I can put it here.
The possibilities are making me foam at the mouth! Just remember when you are out shopping and you see something that is the perfect size and shape but not the perfect color that you can paint it. You can do it! Really. Just paint it. Even if it’s not with crazy taped designs like I did it can be something simple which can go a long way. TRY IT!!!
Have fantastic rest of your week!! If you ever head into southeast PA, give me a shout out or come in to the store for a one of my paint workshops and I can personally show you how paint!!!
